About Roger Butler
I've been studying counselling, part-time, for over twenty years. I've drawn my studies from a variety of sources, with my main area of interest being in Process Oriented Psychology, where I was a formal student for ten years (including their 'Two-Year Professional Training'). A core idea behind this modality is that in any situation, pleasant or otherwise, there's a 'process' wanting to unfold, and the role of the therapist or facilitator is to follow the feedback that supports that unfolding.
In terms of accreditation, it's difficult to precisely correlate this private, international course with a local qualification. However, with 1000+ of hours of in-person training, 100+ hours of supervised practice, and 400+ hours of my own therapy - the training model is very strong on having one's own house in order before trying to help others with theirs! - it exceeds the requirements of most Australian counselling qualifications. A statement of my completed studies within this modality is available on request.
I was a counsellor for around five years to 2017, starting practice again in 2020. I have two supervisors, and participate in peer supervision and professional development.
Counselling in Victoria falls under this Code of Conduct.
I completed the Advanced Certificate in Facilitation in 2000. Having facilitated around 2,000 groups over the course of 20 years, I have an unusual level of experience in this area - in particular relating to sexuality, relationships, and self development (over 12,000 enrolments), but also including community, workplace, corporate, and government settings.
An unprompted reference from a client:
"With now having seen a diverse range of counsellors for over 18 years, my experience of having Roger as my chosen counsellor is a leader who is brilliantly effective and facilitates transformational sessions.
Roger's empathetic listening, acute creativity, and well-harnessed skills offers me an invaluable and unique space of safety and trust- exploration of the darkest and deepest parts of my life...and a place where no person has been able to reach before. I have felt incredibly acknowledged and accepted without judgement or justification for the complex life journeys I have been through."
